Surviving Cold Weather: Simply Survival (Greg Davenport’s Books for the Wilderness)
The first in “Greg Davenport’s Books for the Wilderness” series, “Surviving Cold Weather” covers the techniques and equipment necessary for surviving in ice and snow. Photos and drawings illustrate gear and techniques. The book covers the five survival essentials–personal protection, signaling, sustenance, navigation, and health–as they relate to the cold. Topics include: how to dress for winter; how to create a campsite and what to use as shelter; how to keep warm; how to signal for help with aerial flares, smoke, mirrors, and whistles; finding and purifying water; finding and preparing food; protecting yourself and your supplies from wildlife; how to use a map and compass; how to travel on snow and ice with snowshoes, skis, and crampons; and how to avoid and deal with avalanches. Upcoming books in the series are “Surviving Open and Coastal Waters,” “Surviving the Desert,” and “Surviving the Jungle.”

Surviving Cold Weather: Simply Survival (Greg Davenport’s Books for the Wilderness) Reviews

The best part about this survival guide is Davenport’s descriptions of “improvised” items. Most people don’t plan to be in a survival situation in freezing temperatures, and may not have the proper equipment. He teaches you how to use survival items you have purchased and may have with you (such as an avalanche beacon or a signal flare), but also what to do in a situtation in which you don’t have what you need (improvising snowshoes, stick and shadow compass, etc). The section on constructing emergency shelters gave detailed instructions for many options depending on what resources are available – trees, ice, and/or deep snow. He even provides pictures as proof of his methods. The information on how to obtain food, especially berries, and how to navigate without a map or compass was also extremely helpful. The only disappointing thing for me in this book was the information on animals. Many of the descriptions seemed cut-and-pasted, with really no specific tips on how to avoid polar bear attacks versus brown bears versus pumas.
I bought this book because I live in Alaska and was hoping to learn something that would keep me from becoming one of the many people that do not survive in the wilderness out here because they are unprepared! I bring it with me when I go backpacking or camping, because you never know. I recommend reading this book if you spend time outdoors in cold weather, whether you put yourself in risky situations or not. You’ll learn not only how to be prepared but how to stay alive if you are lost or find yourself without adequate transportation, food, or shelter.

A good book for winter travels. Has the right skills for winter recreation and describes them easily and most are simple to do as long as you have the right mindset if you have become upon a dangerous situation. Remember to stop and think and check your gear if you have found yourself lost in the woods or back country weither in a car, on foot etc.

Gerber 22-01400 LMF II Survival Knife – Coyote Brown Reviews

I own this item and it is extremely sturdy and perfect for survival tasks. The blade is thick and the window breaker at the end of the handle is useful in emergencies. I CANNOT recommend this seller however, “Buy From The Best Inc.” The customer service of this seller was a joke – after not shipping my item even after a week, they gave me attitude, redtape, and actually wanted me to contact amazon for them to work out their problem. When I told them it is THEIR repsonsibility to process the order with amazon they gave me more BS. When I simply told them they had 10 days to ship me the item I paid for, they STILL couldn’t manage to do it! Ha! What kind of company takes 17 days to ship something within the US? I cancelled my order, wisely. Save yourself the headache, especially with an expensive item like this knife, and go with a different seller that has their act together. Please rate my review highly, so others can get this warning too.

I bought this knife for camping and backpacking. The case straps to your calf or belt. The knife is heavy duty and can take a beating. The website below shows videos of what this knife can take. I knew it was a good knife before I bought it, I just didn’t realize how good. It has some weight to it, but has a ton of great features. The blade is nearly 5 inches long and partially serrated. The case is fire resistant, has a built in sharpener, and securely holds the knife in place. The grip is comfortable and secure. Gerber designed this knife with the military, you can tell. I love Gerber, and I love the LMF 2, defiantly the best knife I own.

Adventure Medical Kits Pocket Survival Pack Reviews

Doug Ritter and his foundation, Equipped to Survive, has come up with a very economic method to equip yourself and your family with an emergency kit. It is small enough to carry unnoticed in a pocket, yet fully functional.
Although you can control the amount of certain items if you put together your own kit (something of a rite of passage among the survivalists/emergency preparedness folk), I spent twice as much putting together a comparable kit. The military issue sparklite and tinder-quick, Fox-40 whistle, and Rescue Flash signal mirror alone could cover the cost of the kit and they are all top notch gear. This pack is extremely high quality through and through, from choice of equipment to packing and instructions. I recommend looking at the ETS website at the slideshow of how such a kit is put together and what Doug Ritter himself recommends that you add to the kit (the pouch can hold a few more small items such as water purification tabs).
The Pocket Survival Pack is an amazing value. I’ve purchased all of the items separately, and just the shipping or driving to pick up 3 or 4 of the items probably covers half the cost! If you are lucky enough to get everything at one store, you’d be hard pressed to get the entire kit as cheap as this. I know people who have purchased this kit to take the parts for their own self-built survival kits! That’s how economical it is. Plus, if you buy this PSP, a portion of the proceeds goes to the ETS non-profit group which gives free survival consulting to deployed troops and is actively involved in improving survival equipment and standards. In fact, Doug Ritter is the only consumer advocate working with the governing body on personal locator beacons used in marine, aviation, and remote travel.
The kit itself comes in a waterproof container. I found it to be a bit tight when closing back up, but there is actually some room for more items. All components are of the highest quality. It’s lightweight and I never notice it in a pocket. With the recommended ETS or similar keychain LED flashlight and a good pocket folding knife, you have a complete survival kit that rivals ones costing 0+. These are cheap enough to get one for each car and any camping/hiking/marine/aviation gear you might have. I highly recommend this PSP. I’m not affiliated with ETS, but I’ve come to appreciate their no-nonsense advice and forums. And if this was a bad kit, I’d still say so. I give it 5 stars, great value for the price and it really could save your life.

I’ve been looking over Doug Ritter’s website for a while and finally broke down and bought two of these kits. In short: this is a fantastic bargain, and is truly a useful set of things to have with you if the poo poo hits the fan near you. The spark-lite sparker and tinder is worth alone, the signal mirror is worth another , and there’s half of the purchase price covered right there. All of the components are very deliberately selected to be easily useful, to work together to improve your chances, and to be impressively affordable.
I found that there is enough extra space in the pouch for a keychain LED light, six hurricane matches with striking strip wrapped in foil, and 10 Potable Aqua tablets in a perfume vial. You lose the ability to fold the top over when you add these things, but I’m keeping my kit in a backpack pocket, not in a pants pocket. So, not a problem for me.
I also decided to make a more substantial survival kit for when I’m backpacking. After doing a little looking around and checking prices on the individual bits and pieces, I chose to use my second Pocket Survival Pak as the starting point. This saved me a bundle of time and effort, knowing that all of the components were very high quality and already configured to be compact and ready to go. The only thing I didn’t use in the bigger kit was the tiny compass. Even the vinyl pouch became the first aid kit holder in the bigger survival kit.
In closing, this is an amazingly well-conceived set of items that you may need some day, packaged in such a way that you’re likely to have them on you when that time comes. I can’t say enough about this kit. Truly amazing.

Police Safety and Survival 1 DVD
Law enforcement officers face potentially serious threats to their safety in every confrontation, from suspects who passively resist arrest to those intent on creating a life threatening situation by disarming an officer. In the Police Safety and Survival series, veteran law enforcement officers and training instructors Mark Wyler and Eric Murray teach the finer points of defusing potentially lethal situations with a variety of verbal, empty hand and weapons techniques. In Police Safety and Survival 1, the emphasis is on use of the kubaton, pressure point striking, handgun retention and handgun disarming. Learn to use hard and soft pressure point techniques against both active and passive resisters. Use the sympathetic nervous system to create involuntary reactions ranging from a creating distance or distracting a suspect or to momentarily disabling him. The second portion of the DVD covers retention of the handgun both in and out of the holster and disarming techniques in the event that a suspect gains control of the officer’s handgun or if the unarmed officer finds himself facing a weapon at close range.
