The diseases most commonly seen in travellers are diarrhoea, malaria (if you travel in a malaria-infested area), accidents (when travelling by automobile or swimming), wound infections and sexually transmitted diseases.

- Diarrhoea is caused by contaminated food and drinking-water. You must therefore be careful if your are travelling in poor hygiene conditions.

- In order to prevent accidents during travelling, it’s wise to apply the same precautions as those taken at home. In addition, it’s very important that all wounds should be thoroughly disinfected in order to avoid infection.

- Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes, so the first thing to do is to protect yourself against these mosquitoes.

¡¤ TRAVELLER’S DIARRHOEA

Many intestinal infections are attributable to infections picked up by mouth or hands. With a little care most of these illnesses can be prevented. Hepatitis A, typhoid fever, polio and cholera still occur in countries with poor hygiene, but these diseases are easily prevented.

However, the chance is  large that you will still contract a light and/or nondangerous form of traveller’s diarrhoea. Traveller’s diarrhoea  always spontaneously clears up after a few days, but can nevertheless be irritating. And a risk to your overall and travel health.

In the first place measures must be taken against dehydration. Likewise, treatment of the symptoms must be considered in order to reduce the number of bowel movements and relieve other symptoms such as fever, vomiting and stomach cramps. Sometimes a more serious form of diarrhoea occurs, for which specific treatment with antibiotics is indicated or where hospitalisation or fluid replacement appears unavoidable.

- raw vegetables and fruits that you’ve not peeled yourself
- uncooked or unpasteurized dairy products
- insufficiently cooked sea foods (+ Hepatitis A !) and meat
- “local meals” which do not smell fresh
- ice-cream bought from street merchants (industrial ice straight from the deep-freeze is probably safe).

It takes only a few basic preventive measures to make your trip a success : Total prevention of traveller’s diarrhoea is impossible and it’s obvious that preventive measures can never be strictly followed at all times. But following preventive measures do significantly reduce the risk of contracting serious diarrhoea: In order to maintain nice travel health wash your hands before eating and avoid (if possible):

it’s very important to disinfect drinking-water on adventure trips. Total sterilisation of drinking water is impossible. The following measures considerably reduce the contamination risk and safeguard your travel health:

Cooked meals should be served hot. The place where you eat is also important. A meal taken from a stall presents a greater risk than a meal taken in a restaurant. Avoid restaurants where there’s a lot of insects.
Avoid tap water and ice-cubes. Bottled water and soft drinks are safe. Watch out for bottle caps that have already been used.

- Boiling the water is very effective.
- A nice alternative is chemical disinfection with chlorine drops (e.g. Hadex?, Drinkwell chloor?; available in sport shops specialized in outdoor activities) or chlorine tablets (Certisil Combina?; chloramine tablets; available at the pharmacy). Their effect can be improved by first filtering unclear water. Silver salts (Micropur?, Certisil Argento?) are not very suitable to disinfect water, but they keep disinfected water germ-free for a long time.

For adventurous travellers conscious to travel health it’s best to buy a portable water-filter. The use of antibiotics in order to prevent diarrhoea before it occurs can be dangerous + Also the use of other preventive medications is not recommended.

. How to treat diarrhoea?

it’s very important to consume sufficient liquid and salt in order to prevent dehydration. You can do this by taking salt solutions, but tea with lemon, broth, soft drinks and fruit juice, supplemented with salt crackers are tastier. Commercial salt products are available on the market (ORS-solution).

Antibiotics are indicated :

Taking an anti-diarrhoea preparation (loperamide, e.g. Imodium?) can greatly reduce the number of bowel movements, with a considerable reduction of the complaints as a result. Imodium? may only be used by adults and older children and only for treating ordinary watery diarrhoea: 1 capsule after every loose movement up to a maximum of 4 per day.

1. If blood, mucus or pus are present in the stools.
2. If after 24 to 48 hours, there is no sign of improvement and the diarrhoea is accompanied by fever (above 38.5 C) or severe abdominal cramps, or if there’s over six stools per 24 hours and  when these also occur at night.
3. Or if because of travel circumstances a quicker solution is absolutely desirable . Appropriate antibiotics are only to be used on doctor’s prescription

¡¤ SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES

Casual sexual contacts tend to be higher while on holiday abroad. Sexually transmitted diseases, particularly AIDS, form therefore an important risk for travellers.  often unintentional and unsafe sexual contact takes place under alcohol influence. Prevention while on holiday abroad is no different from the precautions you take at home. Adequate use of a condom, preferably bought at home, is absolutely essential. Only a water-soluble lubricant should be used, but it only offers a partial guarantee (e.g. KY gel). Vaccination against hepatitis B is advised. Always consult your doctor if you reckon you’re at risk, even when there’s no symptoms.

¡¤ MALARIA (swamp fever, malaria)

The symptoms include attacks of fever, but can initially be  similar to influenza. If adequate treatment is not started in time, an attack may sometimes result in death within a few days.

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by a parasite (called Plasmodium) transmitted by the bite of the Anopheles mosquito. there’s two different types of which Malaria falciparum is the most dangerous and the most widespread. The incubation period – the time between an infecting bite and the appearance of the disease – varies from ten days to two weeks (rarely several months).

Malaria only occurs in those areas in which Anopheles mosquitoes are present : in the tropics and in a large number of subtropical areas. From a height of 1.500 to 2.500 m onwards, depending on temperature and climate, Anopheles mosquitoes are either rare or non-existent.

. Where does malaria occur?

Risk also exists in the suburbs of the big cities in Asia (e.g. in India). In a few of areas the risk varies according to the season.

In most big cities there is little or no risk at all of infection, except in Africa where a real risk exists.

. How can malaria be prevented?

it’s very important for travel health to avoid mosquito bites : the Anopheles mosquito only bites between dusk and dawn, is  small and not very makes any noise.

Non containing DEET repellents were less examined; Autan-Active. and Mosegor. are however excellent safe products.

- In the evening wear light-coloured clothing which covers your arms and legs as much as possible. Apply repellent cream with a DEET basis (20 to 50%, for children and pregnant women preferably 20 to 30%) to the uncovered parts of your body. Repeat this every two to six hours (it won’t protect you all night).

If these measures are carried out correctly, the risk of malaria will be reduced by 80 to 90% and travel health is maintained

- Sleep in rooms that leave no access to mosquitoes, (mosquito nets on the sills, electrically-warmed anti-mosquito plates, air-conditioning) or sleep under a mosquito net impregnated with permethrine or deltamethrine hung over the bed with the edges tucked under the mattress.

. The intake of pills as prevention

there is no drug efficient  to prevent malaria 100%, which means that  often a combination of measures is preferable. Also the drugs used have changed over the years. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of drugs should be considered against the risk of malaria infection. These risks are dependent on the visited country, and on the region, the season, the duration of your stay and the kind of trip.

Therefore it’s the doctor who can best decide for each individual which drug to use. This explains why individuals from the same group may end up taking different drugs.

Some people might be troubled by the side effects while taking antimalarial drugs. These are usually mild and are not always a reason to stop taking the pills. Sometimes it may be necessary to alter to another type of medication due to intestinal problems, allergic reactions or other intolerance symptoms.

Finally, as no drug is 100% effective in preventing malaria, it’s important that if an attack of fever occurs in the first three months after your return from the tropics, a malaria infection should be considered as a possibility despite the correct use of the drug prescribed.

However, it’s reassuring to know that malaria, provided it’s recognised in time, is easy to treat without any danger of recurrent attacks. The belief that “once malaria always malaria” is  untrue.

There are few places on Earth that have so many diverse hiking and biking opportunities in such a small area as in Crimea. A multitude of micro-climates and micro-ecosystems and an abundance of roads, trails, and historical objects make Crimea a very interesting place to explore. However, the vast majority of hikers and cyclists visit the mountain part of Crimea which is south of Simferopol. The rest of the peninsula is flat and quite monotonous.

As elsewhere in Ukraine, there are rules for visiting Crimea’s wilderness areas and these rules can sometimes be unduly harsh, but they are poorly enforced. Mainly this applies to the Crimean Nature Reservation Area.

The Crimean Nature Reservation area is located to the northeast of Yalta and includes the highest point on the peninsula, Roman Kosh (1545 meters), and a beautiful 77 km long automobile road through forests and mountain pastures. This area is completely off-limits to the public except for special visits, accompanied by forest rangers, which must be approved by the reserve’s headquarters in Alushta. They do not give permission to hikers. Nonetheless, stalwart backpackers continue to visit this area and forest rangers only patrol a certain section of the road and are relaxed enforcing the rules. Backpackers trade know-how on visiting this area and avoiding rangers at the Crimea Mountain rescue service forum.

Camping is formally allowed only in certain places which are called “turstoyanki” or ??????????. In most cases they are marked on topographical maps as a “?/?”. Camping in unauthorized locations is also common, though formally forbidden. Open fires are only allowed at turstoyanki areas.

The main starting points for hikers are mostly the cities Simferopol and Bakhchisaray, both cities are connected by train to the major cities of Ukraine such as Lviv, Kiev, Kharkov, and Donetsk. Other towns with train access are Sevastopol and Feodosiya which are somewhat less popular with hikers because the mountains are further away. The South Shore is not accessible by train, so backpackers usually begin on the north side of the mountains and work their way to the south, then take a bus back to the train station and head home.

If you’re not sure where you plan to end your trip and get on the train, and you’re going to be hiking in southwest Crimea, buy a return ticket from Sevastopol. That way you can get on at any stop between Sevastopol and Simferopol. Train tickets are best bought a week or two in advance during summer months.

The South Shore of Crimea from Balaklava to Sudak, has a near-Mediterranean climate, with nice dry air most of the time, sunny summers, and temperatures moderated by breezes from the Black Sea. The rest of the peninsula has a moderate continental climate with more extreme temperatures. The mountain plateaus above 800 meters which are called yayla, have a climate of their own that is extremely unpredictable. The weather may change many times during the day, and hail is common in the summer, blizzards in the winter, and strong gusts of wind at all times of year.

Generally speaking, the western half of the Crimean Mountains from Foros to a bit beyond Alushta are well-watered, while those to the east of Alushta are drier, and those east of Sudak even more dry. The flat areas of Crimea to the north of Simferopol are all semi-arid. The greenest areas of Crimea are the mountain slopes around Yalta and the mountains directly south of Simferopol and Bakhchisaray. The mountain plateaus actually receive the most precipitation (up to 1000 mm a year), but have much less forest cover and so can seem hotter and drier, especially when the sun is out.

The high tourist season in Crimea is July and August. If you are hiking around Crimea’s South Shore, these months are best avoided because of the crowds and the heat. The months April to June and September to early November are ideal times for hiking. Crimea is also flooded with backpackers and vacationers during the May holidays , which are the first ten days of May.

Snow is possible in Crimea from November to April, but usually only the mountains have stable snow cover in the periods January-February or December-March above 600m. The high plateaus have patches of snow into early May. Crimea in the wintertime can be quite cold, down to -10 C.

I have will go through some popular hiking destinations which you can explore, and also give you some tips for these destinations.

Experience the Grand Canyon (400-800 m), by starting from Sokolinoe , take a bus from Bakhchisaray or Simferopol. There is a small entrance fee, but you will have to wait for the ranger finding you.

Going to Ay-Petri Plateau and Ay-Petri Mt. (1234 m), by initiate your trip from Yalta by minibus from the bus station, or by aerial tram from Miskhor to the south, take bus there from Yalta or Sevastopol, or alternatively from Sokolinoe or Grand Canyon area to the north. There are no buses, but cars drive up to the pass. You have to be aware of long waiting time at aerial tram in summer which could be up to 2-3 hours.

To see the Babugan Plateau and Roman Kosh Mt. (1545 m), you first have to be aware of that his site is officially closed to public. You start on foot from Gurzuf , which you get to by taking bus from Yalta or Alushta. It is a 1200 m elevation difference from Gurzuf to the top. Some routes may involve avoiding forest rangers, since area is off limits.

To get to Chatyr-Dag Plateau and Eklizi-Burun Mt. (1527 m) you start from either Angarskyy pass by the road from Simferopol to Alushta and Yalta, by trolleybus or minibus. Or you start from Perevalnoe village (same road, but nearer to Simferopol), this is a 800 m elevation trip.

To experience the Demerdzhi Plateau, North Demerdzhi Mt. (1356 m) and South Demerdzhi Mt. (1239 m), Valley of the Ghosts, you can start from either Angarskyy pass which is on the road from Simferopol to Alushta and Yalta, or Perevalnoe village, 3. Luchistoe village which you get to by bus from Alushta.

Karabi Plateau, Kara-Tau Mt. (1220 m), Tay-Koba Mt. (1259 m) sites can be accessed easiest either from Golovankovka or Krasnoselovka villages by bus from Simferopol to Belogorsk, then by minibus, alternatively from Generalskoe village with bus from Alushta. This is the most remote mountains of Crimea.

Summer temperatures sometimes get as high as 35-40 C, and the heat can be intolerable in exposed places if there is no wind. Often, however, summer temperatures are somewhat lower than in steppe areas of Ukraine because of the moderating influence of the nearby Black Sea. In the warm months, when the sun is out and there is no wind, it can be unbearably hot along the South Shore.

Beware of ticks in the woods of Crimea. They are quite common and theoretically can carry tick-borne encephalitis (or so say the warning signs). It is recommended to wear a hat and have as little exposed skin as possible and to check yourself for ticks every two hours. Don’t freak out about encephalitis, though; a small percentage of ticks carry it, and it is medically treatable.

There is a tax for visiting mountain forest areas which is 2 hryvnias per person per day. However, it is up to the forest ranger that find you and make you pay it. Or you can pay the fee when you register with the Mountain Rescue Service and they will stamp your itinerary sheet so that you don’t have to pay the fee a second time.

Hikers are supposed to register trip itineraries. This procedure is easy since the Rescue Service is only loosely tied to the government and is quite innovative sometimes, and simply involves filling out a paper stating how many people are in your group and where you plan to be each day, and the name and home address of hike participants. No passport information, visa numbers, etc. You turn this paper in at any of the Mountain Rescue Service posts and get an “approved” stamp. These posts are in locations that most hikers pass through anyways, so you can drop by the post right after you get off the train in Simferopol, Bakhchisaray, or other locations. Unfortunately, some trains get in early in the morning before the offices open. If you run into forest rangers and other official nature supervisors, they are authorized to ask for an authorized itinerary. A small fee of 1 or 2 hryvnias per person, depending on where you register is charged for registration. You are supposed to report in at the end of the trip to confirm your completion of the itinerary.

The itinerary form can also be downloaded and sent be e-mail. In this case you would need to bring the completed form in person, tell them the registration number you received by e-mail, pay the fee, and get a stamp. There is a special post 200 meters from the Simferopol train station especially for itinerary registration that operates from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. all days of the week. Supposedly the procedure is quick.

Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Expect the Worst
In general, it’s wise to choose a tent that’s designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you’ll face. For instance, if you’re a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick–especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you’re a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you’ll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.

Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you’d like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you’re a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don’t need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it’s easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It’s also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you’re considering.

When you bring up the subject of vacation with your kids, there is usually one of two responses; either they want to go to Disneyland for the third time or they want to take an exotic trip that Indiana Jones would consider an adventure. The Great Wall and the temples of Thailand are impressive and so much more interesting in person. Sites in these big cities allow your family to enjoy the culture but also retire to your comfortable hotel room so your exploration is not too stressful.

European cities offer the best combination of family-friendly and culture however there is a higher price tag. Museums and tourist attractions in Europe offer family discounts and sipping an espresso after climbing the Eiffel Tour has a big draw for parents while keeping the children amused.

Since international travel requires passports and generally long flights, you may want to consider destinations that are closer to home. Hawaii, for example, offers sun, beach and hiking so while you’re sipping your Mai Tai the kids can swim at the pool. As an added attraction there is no language barrier and flight discounts are often available to make your vacation more affordable.

It’s often a compromise to find the vacation that suits your entire family but a holiday with children doesn’t have to be the tried-and-true theme park. With some research and planning, exotic destinations that cater to families can be found to delight both you and your children.

Seems like everyone carries a cell phone, iPod or other electronic device these days. Kids are no exception, but what happens when kids want to bring these items to summer camp?

Some camps allow kids to bring electronic gadgets with them to camp. One camp even includes an “optional cell phone” in its suggested packing list.

But that’s the exception, not the rule. Most camps restrict kids from bringing these items to camp completely.

Theresa Torrone, the director her own summer camp in Los Angeles, California, does not allow portable electronics at camp. “We believe iPods, Gameboys, cell phones, other portable electronic devices electronics are better left at home,” Torrone says. “Not only are these items easily lost, damaged or even stolen, they are counterproductive to the camp experience.”

Torrone says the goals at her camp include teaching kids about beach and ocean ecology, introducing them to new aquatic activities like surfing and jet skiing, and facilitating new friendships, among others. But if children are listing to iPods or talking on cell phones, “they typically do so in isolation, apart from the rest of the camp group,” argues Torrone. “We believe a large part of going to camp is sharing new experiences in a group setting. When kids are playing with their cell phones or electronics, their opportunities to learn and experience new things with their group are limited.”

According to Torrone, some parents insist on sending a cell phone to camp with their kids because they feel more comfortable knowing they can reach their child anytime just by calling.

“But a major component to the camp experience is learning to live independently. Kids can’t do that with their parents calling them all the time. So we feel that parents should resist the temptation to send their kids to camp with cell phones. If you need to reach your child in an emergency or for any other reason, just call or email the camp office. They’ll be able to contact your child right away.”

Torrone says many camps now use technology to give parents “an arms length way” to see and communicate with their kids while they’re at camp. Some camps will post pictures of the campers on the Internet while others give parents the opportunity to send one-way emails to their kids as an alternative to sending letters.

Torrone understands kids’ cravings for electronic toys and gadgets. “Many kids are even more tech-savvy than their folks,” she says. And there are some kids, Torrone says, who just “can’t get enough tech.”

In this case, Torrone suggests sending your son or daughter to a technology-based summer program. “Many camps specialize in technology-driven activities,” Torrone said. “Computer camps and video-making camps are really popular these days.”

To find camps like these, or any other type of camp, Torrone advises logging onto http://findacamp.com, the American Camp Association’s summer camp search engine which is filled with a database of approximately 2,500 accredited camps.

Torrone’s Aloha Beach Camp embraces technology and the power of the Internet to provide information to prospective camp families and customers. “But we’d rather not have their kids bringing electronic devices into the camp community.”

Does Torrone ever envision a day when electronic toys and gadgets will be accepted at camp? She pauses to think, then replies, “Well, maybe when campers can learn to ride a horse, bond with the rest of the group, roast marshmallows, do skits around the campfire and download songs to their iPods all at the same time,” she laughs.

Could this be the end of summer camp as we know it?

Have traditional summer camps — where kids enjoy horseback riding, archery, take nature hikes, sing songs and make s’mores around the campfire — seen their final days?

Probably not. But given the way specialty camps are gaining traction among today’s youth, traditional camps may be losing their foothold.

According to Theresa Torrone, a volunteer for the American Camp Association and the owner/operator of her own beach and surf specialty camp in Los Angeles, California, “Specialty camps appeal to kids with very specific interests. Rather than participate in a wide variety of general camp activities, they’d rather spend their summer focusing on just one specialty activity instead.”

Torrone cited cooking camps, dramatic arts camps, and surf (also known as surfing) camps among some of the fastest growing genres in the specialty summer camp field.

“As a volunteer for the American Camp Association, I visit various types of camps each summer, and I’m intimately familiar with many others. I can tell you that the specialty camp sector is growing like gangbusters,” Torrone said.

Given the fact surf camps – where kids learn not only how to surf, but also about surf etiquette, wave judgment and selection, ocean science and water safety – are becoming more prevalent, is Torrone concerned about the inevitable added competition for her own camp?

“Nah,” she said with a smile. “The more kids who experience camp at the beach, the better. If they come to my camp, great. But the most important thing is that they get to experience the ocean environment somewhere. I’m glad there are so many available opportunities for kids to learn to surf at camp.”

 Most likely, the traditional camp experience will last forever because many parents feel that sending their kids to a traditional summer camp is a virtual an American pastime.

But specialty camps are gaining ground fast…of that there is no doubt.

About Eureka
Though the exact year is unknown, Eureka’s long history begins prior to 1895 in Binghamton, New York, where the company still resides today. Then known as the Eureka Tent & Awning Company, its first wares were canvas products–most notably, Conestoga wagon covers and horse blankets for nineteenth century American frontiersmen–as well as American flags, store awnings, and camping tents.

The company increased production of its custom canvas products locally throughout the 1930s and during the 1940 and even fabricated and erected the IBM “tent cities” just outside Binghamton. The seven acres of tents housed thousands of IBM salesmen during the company’s annual stockholders meeting, which had since outgrown its previous locale. In the 1940s, with the advent of World War II and the increased demand for hospital ward tents, Eureka expanded operations and began shipping tents worldwide. Ultimately, upon the post-war return of the GIs and the resultant housing shortage, Eureka turned its attention to the home front during the 1950s by supplying awnings for the multitude of mobile homes that were purchased.

In 1960, Eureka’s new and innovative Draw-Tite tent, with its practical, free standing external frame, was used in a Himalayan Expedition to Nepal by world renowned Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person documented to summit Mt. Everest only six years earlier. In 1963, Eureka made history during its own Mt. Everest ascent, with more than 60 of its tents sheltering participants from fierce 60+ mph winds and temperatures reaching below -20°F during the first all American Mt. Everest Expedition.

For backpackers and families, Eureka introduced its legendary Timberline tent in the 1970s. Truly the first StormShield design, this completely self-supporting and lightweight backpacking tent became one of the most popular tents the entire industry with sales reaching over 1 million by its ten year anniversary.

Eureka tents have also traveled as part of several historic expeditions, including the American Women’s Himalayan Expedition to Annapurna I in 1978 and the first Mt. Everest ascents by a Canadian and American woman in 1986 and 1988. In recent history, tents specially designed and donated by Eureka sheltered Eric Simonson and his team on two historic research expeditions to Mount Everest, this time in a quest for truth regarding the 1924 attempted summit of early English explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. During the 1999 expedition, the team made history finding the remains of George Mallory, but the complete mystery remained unsolved. Returning in 2001 to search for more clues, the team found amazing historical artifacts which are now on display at the Smithsonian.

Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Expect the Worst
In general, it’s wise to choose a tent that’s designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you’ll face. For instance, if you’re a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick–especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you’re a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you’ll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.

Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you’d like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you’re a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don’t need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it’s easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It’s also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you’re considering.

Summer camp enrollment season is here. But the economy stinks and camp’s not cheap. If you’re looking to save few bucks on camp this year – or, even better, to send your kids to camp for FREE – here’s a great way to do it: Barter.

Well, maybe not entirely free. But pretty darn close.  You can send your child to summer camp without outlaying any cash whatsoever. And you don’t need to run up your credit cards, either!

Just in case you’re unfamiliar with the term, “bartering” is just a fancy word for “trading.” So, in this context, we are talking about your trading goods and services in exchange for camp time.

In exchange for providing goods or services, you can send your child to camp for no cash outlay. Camps are as interested in saving money as much as you are, so it’s a pretty good deal for both of you.

If you can find something the camp needs or considers worthwhile, you’re in great shape. Here are some creative ways people like you have traded goods and services to send their kids to summer camp in the past: 

A single dad owned a Public Relations firm. He wanted to send his kid to camp. The camp needed promotional services, so they traded PR services for camp sessions.

 Maybe you’re a nurse and you’d like to send your kids to camp. Many camps need nurses. Why not contact the camp to offer your services in exchange for letting your child attend camp? Don’t be surprised if the camp directer jumps at your offer immediately!

Sometimes a camp may even initiate the contact with you to propose a trade. A camp in New England needed graphic design services for their brochure redesign. They searched their prospect list and found a graphic artist. The camp director contacted the graphic designer and proposed a trade: the camp would provide summer camp sessions for the graphic artist’s son if the artist would redesign the camp’s brochure. The graphic artist was elated with the offer. It was a win-win for both parties — just how bartering is supposed to be — since it was a fair trade and neither party had to “pay” a single dime.

One final important point. Even though bartering involves the best of both worlds (with both parties getting valuable goods or services without paying cash), there may be tax implications. For example, our understanding is that the IRS generally considers the fair market value of what you “sell” via barter taxable income.
