Could This Be The Most Ambitious Mountain Hike Ever

It has often been suggested that the most dangerous destination for mountain hiking in the world is the hike up to Mount Huashan in China. It starts with the Heavenly Stairs, a long, steep narrow series of concrete steps which are tolerable at best. However, only the most courageous trekker would venture across Canglong Ridge (also known as the Black Dragon Ridge), which is even steeper and narrower, with very sharp drops to the left and right.

The next phase in this hike is a steep series of steps. Here, the climb becomes more severe as hikers reach West Peak Mountain, before climbing all the way to the top of Mount Huashan. The view from the top of the mountain is phenomenal and tourists who have been brave enough to reach the very top often wish that they could spend the rest of the day their admiring the view.
Unfortunately, the descent back down is said to be even more dangerous than climbing up the mountain. This is especially so in lower temperatures, when just one slip on the icy steps could send hikers to their death within seconds.

Another part of this hike involves a twenty foot series of chains which must be climbed with bare hands. The experience is akin to rock climbing but without any safety mechanisms to protect you from falling: you must reply upon sheer determination and your survival instinct.

Imagine walking on a plank of wood, think of a cliff and think of a 2000 metre drop – and you will be describing another part of the route. This section is particularly frightening, principally due to the fact that it is difficult not to see the drop to your right whilst you walk along the plank of wood that you fervently hope won’t break.

As you return and reach the long series of steps that take you back to the bottom, you will most likely feel relatively at ease, particularly in contrast with the experiences you have endured further up. Despite seeming terrifying when you were walking up them, the steps will appear to be simplicity itself if you have just survived walking along planks of wood that almost appear to be floating in mid air. The end will be near and before you know it the entire experience will seem like a dream. Your perspective of danger and fear will have been completely transformed forever.

It goes without saying that no one, regardless as to their level of hiking experience, should attempt to climb Mount Huashan unless they have the appropriate mountain gear and equipment. Even then, however, it is still discouraged. Those who do brave this dramatic and emotionally painful ‘ride’ may have recurring nightmares about it for years to come. During this experience, the distinction between life and death is little more than the distinction between your left foot and your right foot. The level of concentration required is immense and no one can afford to become distracted, even for a second. In this hike there are a million ways in which a hiker could be killed, but only one way in which to survive – which is to embrace the fear.

Ramdevara Betta, Revana Siddesh Betta

Savana Durga

Mekedatu, Karighatta

According to a legend the river narrows so much at a point that even a goat can jump across the other side. That place gets the name Mekedatu.  Mekedatu is located 98 km from Bangalore, on Mysore Road, in Srirangapatna. The trek involves walking besides the river Kaveri at Sangama. Karighatta hill is located 2697 feet above the sea level and is just few kilometers from Srirangapatna.

Antara Gange

Antara Gange is a hill positioned 65 km from Bangalore in Kolar district. The mountain range is 2 miles from Kolar. Antara Gange or ‘Ganges from deep’ is named so because of incessant flow of underground water to a pond by the shrine on the hill peak.

Kaivara

Located 80 km from Bangalore on NH7, Kaivara is the place where Bheema is believed to have killed demon Bakasura. This place has an interesting history attached to it. And trekking around here will help you discover all of it.

Huliyur Durga, Hemagiri Betta, Kumbhi Betta

Huliyur has an enormous rock-strewn overhang amidst deep woods on which a fortress was built during Kempegowda’s time and hence its name – Huliyur Durga. At 3800 feet above sea level, Hemagiri betta is one of the uppermost hills. Kumbhi Betta is a petite mount on which stands the fortress of Kempegowda’s times. This place is situated 80 km from Bangalore at the Kunigal taluk.

Skandagiri

Skandagiri is located 75 km from Bangalore near Chikkalballapur. You can start trekking from the Papagni temple in Kalwara village and reach the top within 3 hours. Moonlight treks here are a hit. The best time to visit is during November and January. The entry fee to get inside is Rs 15/-.

Ranganatha Swamy Betta

This place is near Konavaradoddi village. It is 45 km from Bangalore. It gets the name from the temple situated here which is dedicated to Lord Ranganathaswamy. It is 4 km trek to the mountain peak. When you reach the top you can relish the beautiful views of the surrounding villages and forest. The temple remains open for visits on Saturdays only.

Honnemaradu

This is a day trek where the trek is to Honnemaradu from Talaguppa. Honnemaradu is a town by the Liganamakki dam. It is in the Shimoga District in north-west Karnataka about 25 km from Sagar town en route Jog Falls. It is the control center for Western Ghats Restoration Project.

Anatargange

Anthargange is in Kolar, 60 km away from Bengalaguru. Anthargange is an ultimate site for not so strenuous treks, some rock climbing and fun-filled camping. The forty-five minutes hill climbing is taxing but it opens up for an extensive and beautiful green plateau on the top.

If you are a nature lover and often go jungle trekking with your pet dog, you would have noticed dangers along the way that would have been harmful to your dog, as it may cause it injuries or even be threatening to its life. To ensure that you and your dog would be guarded against these hazards along the terrain you like to travel on, here are some areas you should avoid and keep your dog away from.

Mountains provide beautiful views and sceneries, and a lot of people enjoy climbing one to spend some quality time there with his dog. There are many dangers along the mountainside, such as the height, and the drop-off cliffs.

Dogs, unlike humans, usually have no fear of heights. In this case, ignorance is bliss. A dog can actually walk alongside the cliff a mile high and would not be concerned with the dangers of falling off at all. When they actually do slip and lose their balance, there is almost nothing they can do to save themselves from falling over the side. There are many areas at edges of cliffs which may be concealed by snow and a dog would not realize that mistake when it is too late.

Besides the dangers of falling over cliffs, there is also the danger of high altitudes which is harmful to your dog. Older dogs may have difficulties breathing at higher altitudes, and that may result in a tragic death. If your dog has health issues such as heart problems, lung problems or if they are a brachycephalic breed (short-nosed), do try to keep them away from high altitudes as it is more hazardous for them.

As we all are aware, oxygen supply decreases as one reaches higher altitudes. Your dog’s body is not accustomed to this and it may get shortness of breath, or even altitude sickness. Bear in mind that if you started hiking with your dog on a hot day at a low altitude and ended up being in a cold weather at high altitudes at the peak, both of you may not be prepared for the changes that will take place.

If you are going to take your dog camping or hiking with you then it is better to do some simple checks before you embark on your outing. There are many dog owners who will spend hours considering what type of new outfit to purchase for their dog when looking at dog clothes, and the same amount of time and consideration has to be applied before going camping with your animal.

The first step to take is to make sure your dog has all his/her vaccinations up to date, and it can also be a good idea to take along a copy or proof of its rabies vaccination. The next step is to check that you have taken a flea or tick precaution; this can either be with the animal wearing a flea collar or using the drops on the coat that can be acquired from the veterinarian.

If you have not already, then it is a good idea to have an ID tag on the dog, this could have for instance the name of the camping area where you are based or park. On the other side of the tag you could also put both your phone details, you’re home and mobile. All dogs should have a microchip with all the details but a tag on the dog is also beneficial to the owner in case of any mishaps.

There are many people who have taken their dog hiking or camping from when it was a tiny puppy and now enjoys. However for those of you who are going to take your dog for the first time then some light exercise needs to be done, after all you would not run a marathon without proper training and the same is necessary for your dog.

If your dog is obedient and does not run around barking and chasing people constantly then it should be alright to take them camping. If though you have a dog that is rather mischievous then a camping outing is not a good idea. It is always best to contact any campsites and parks before making the trip to make sure that a dog is allowed.

When packing for the trip as well as a first aid kit for yourself you will also need one for your dog, and if the weather is going to be hot put in a sun block for your dog, dogs can get sunburn just like humans. It is wise to take an extra lead in case the normal one gets damaged or wet, but take a normal one not the retractable lead as they can be quite dangerous when climbing steep hills. Then there is the usual like dog bowl, water, toy and a blanket in case the nights turn colder.

One of the most important things to remember is to take plenty of water, both you and your dog will drink more than usual. Whether you are going hiking or camping always keep a check every now and then on your dogs paws. As much as they love you they cannot turn around and tell you if they have a thistle or raw paw pad or small stone on their pad. If you venture through any long grass the same applies to the nose, eye and ears for any small blades of grass and also for any sign of ticks. As long as thought and proper preparation has been thought about there is know reason why you and your dog cannot have an enjoyable time.
